The US will work with Japan and South Korea to help Taiwan defend itself. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said the three countries agreed that there must be peace in the Taiwan Strait. Ms Sherman was in Tokyo for talks with her Japanese and South Korean counterparts. However, she reiterated Washington’s stance that it does not support Taiwan’s independence. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu said China is likely to ramp up diplomatic “attacks” on the island, following last week’s Communist Party Congress that cemented President Xi Jinping’s grip on power.
