US, Japan and South Korea warn of “unprecedented” response if Pyongyang holds nuclear test

US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman is in Tokyo for talks with her Japanese and South Korean counterparts. The allies discussed simmering tension in the Korean Peninsula. They believe North Korea’s seventh nuclear bomb test is imminent, and have warned of an unrivalled scale of response if Pyongyang proceeds. South Korea and the US are currently holding military drills, which they say are necessary to prepare for any North Korean threats. Pyongyang has condemned the drills for raising tensions, and has test-fired rockets and artillery in response.
