Singapore’s death rate returned to 2018 levels because of the pandemic. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said it wiped out improvements over a few years, but the population’s high COVID-19 vaccination rate has kept excess deaths low. Excess deaths refer to the increased death rate during COVID-19, compared to the expected rate in the absence of a pandemic. Mr Ong added that Singapore has an excess mortality rate that’s among the lowest in the world.
