Singapore to repeal 377A: Lawrence Wong and Edwin Tong speak to CNA

The issue of whether to repeal Section 377A of the Penal Code, which criminalises sex between men, does not meet the “very high” bar for a nationwide referendum, said Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong on Monday (Aug 22) in an interview with CNA. He added that repealing 377A is a matter of public policy and the PAP does not intend to lift the party whip when the issue is debated in Parliament.

Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong, who is also Second Minister for Law, added that it is not possible to keep the status quo on 377A much longer as the current legal position is an “untidy compromise” vulnerable to challenges in court.
