Russian defence minister says “no need” to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has insisted Moscow has no need to use nuclear arms in Ukraine. He called speculation that Russia would use atomic weapons “absolute lies”. Mr Shoigu insisted the main purpose of Russia’s vast stockpile is to deter a nuclear attack. Meanwhile, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant has been subjected to shelling this month, with some shots hitting close to reactors. While Moscow and Kyiv blame each other for the damage, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned of the consequences should the facility experience a meltdown.
