Malaysia’s Budget 2023 brought forward to Oct 7, paving way for general election

Speculation around the timing of a general election in Malaysia has flared, following an announcement that the next Budget will be brought forward. The government has said it will now be delivered on Oct 7 — three weeks earlier than originally planned. However, the prime minister’s office said this is not linked to the timing of a general election. Meanwhile, former prime minister Najib Razak has returned to court for his second corruption trial over the pilfering of the 1MDB state fund, just days after his 12-year prison term began.
