Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong delivered his Malay and Mandarin National Day Rally 2022 speeches on Sunday (Aug 21) at the Institute of Technical Education headquarters in Ang Mo Kio.
In his Malay speech, Mr Lee said contributions of the Malay-Muslim community during the COVID-19 pandemic are testament to society’s progress and success. He also said next year is the 20th anniversary of the Religious Rehabilitation Group and lauded the group for its work in protecting the Muslim community from extremist ideologies and helping to maintain trust and confidence in the multi-racial, multi-religious society.
In his Mandarin NDR speech, Mr Lee noted that Singapore’s external environment has become unstable, citing the deepening US-China division and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Singapore must guard against hostile foreign influence operations, said PM Lee, warning of messages about taking sides in the Ukraine conflict.
He also said it would be irresponsible not to raise the GST as healthcare and social spending is increasing sharply.
