India’s ban on single-use plastic kicks in

India has banned the use of single-use plastic items in what’s being seen as the country’s biggest push to cut plastic pollution. At least nineteen items, such as plastic straws and cutlery, will be outlawed. Environmentalists have welcomed the move, but businesses and consumers may find it difficult to comply with the new rules. India generated four million tonnes of plastic waste in 2021, of which more than a third were single-use items. The government will impose a fine of $1,500 and up to one year’s jail for the manufacture, import and use of nearly 19 single-use plastic articles.
