Govt to begin public consultation on proposed beverage container return scheme

The government will begin a public consultation later this month (September) on a proposed beverage container return scheme. Under such a scheme, consumers pay a small deposit when purchasing a beverage. It’s refunded when the empty beverage container is returned to a designated point. The consultation will provide details on how the intended scheme works, including the types of beverage containers covered and a suitable refundable deposit amount. In Singapore, it is estimated that more than one billion pre-packaged beverage containers are supplied into the market every year.
