Protesters have taken to the streets of the Philippine capital of Manila, urging President Ferdinand Marcos Jr to stand firm on the country’s claims in the South China Sea in the face of growing Chinese incursions. The demonstrations coincide with the sixth anniversary of a landmark ruling by an international tribunal, which invalidated Beijing’s sweeping claims in the disputed waters in favour of Manila. China has repeatedly rejected the 2016 decision. Protesters have called on Mr Marcos to adopt a more forceful approach towards the issue than that of his predecessor Rodrigo Duterte.
