All debt collection businesses — including their owners and collectors — will need to be screened by the police and assessed to be fit and proper before they are granted a licence to carry out their activities. That’s under a newly passed bill to raise standards in the industry. The sector has seen police reports against problematic conduct hit an average of 367 annually over the past four years. MPs also called for debt collectors to undergo accredited training to ensure they are able to uphold the various laws while carrying out their duties.
