After days of confusion, Sri Lanka has welcomed a controversial Chinese research ship to the Hambantota port. The Yuan Wang 5 will be allowed to remain at the port for about a week to stock up on essentials such as fuel and food. Colombo said the Yuan Wang 5 has been told it cannot carry out research while in the country’s waters. The vessel’s arrival was delayed as New Delhi suspects it may be used to spy on its military facilities, while the US Pentagon claims the ship is operated by the Chinese army.
