Conservationists in Philippines seek to raise awareness, preserve historic sites

Heritage conservationists in Manila are looking at tourism to raise awareness and help preserve historic sites. These places are now under threat due to rapid urbanisation and powerful quakes, which have damaged cultural and heritage buildings. Maintaining historic homes is resource-intensive, so advocates are calling for real estate tax exemptions for owners in exchange for keeping tourism alive in their property. Tax exemptions on tourism-related profits of these heritage homes are also sought, which churches and non-profits already enjoy in the Philippines.
