You still have the freedom to own any sort of vehicle, with any modifications imaginable, as long as you don't drive it on public pavement. market around 1950, is was called a joke, a death trap, how could a funny little car that weighed around 1,600Lbs with an air cooled 26 HP flat 4 sell against any US product, as they say the rest is history. The first Hondas hit the US market when I was in college in 2 versions, both smaller than the current Mini, both used in-line 3 cylinder motors that Honda used from their motorcycle line. One a sort cool looking Mini style sedan and the other looked like Darth Cheney’s helmet, where is Honda now? <br /><br />This past summer I saw a compact crossover in a service area on the NY State Thruway. After pausing for a double take it was Mercedes Benz called a B200 running Quebec plates. I see the little Switch cars quite a bit, running Canadian plates. In the domestic market VW only offers 4 motors in their car line, a 2 liter turbo, a turbo diesel, a 20 valve 5 cylinder and a V6, while in Europe and Great Britain, VW offers 12 motor options one being a highly effient turbo charged 175HP 1.6 liter as well as a 1.3 liter. <br /><br />The point I’m making is just about European, Japanese and South Korean auto manufacture have models and engine configurations that we have not even heard of in the US, which are safe and well built. I’m not going to jump up and down for a Indian mini which has little chance of entering the US market for 2,500 bucks, but if it did and sold in urban areas with emmision controls and safty equipment for lets say 10 grand, I bet it would open the door for the verity of makes and designs that already exist and proven in the European and Asian markets and to a lesser extent Canada that are safe with
